Icteridae - Troupials, Orioles and Allies
The Yellow-rumped Cacique occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests, forest edges, and riverine woodlands below about 800 meters, often favoring areas with tall trees for nesting. It is fairly common and conspicuous in suitable habitat, frequently seen in noisy colonies where individuals forage for insects, nectar, and fruit, and construct long, hanging nests from high branches. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN due to its vast Amazonian range and adaptability to altered landscapes, though its population is suspected to be slowly declining from habitat loss. Natural history observations highlight its complex social behavior, vocal mimicry, and colonial breeding strategy, with nests often placed over water or open areas to deter predators.
