The Rufous-bellied Euphonia occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests, particularly terra firme and forest edges below about 600 meters. It is generally uncommon and patchily distributed, often seen in pairs or small flocks foraging quietly in the canopy for fruit, especially mistletoe berries. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Amazonian range and a stable population, though it is expected to lose over 10% of suitable habitat within three generations due to deforestation. Natural history observations highlight its compact build, rich rufous underparts, and subtle vocalizations, with nesting behavior still poorly documented but likely involving concealed sites in dense foliage.
