Icteridae - Troupials, Orioles and Allies
The Scarlet-rumped Cacique occurs in humid lowland and foothill forests of eastern Ecuador, typically below 1,200 meters, where it frequents forest edges, riverine corridors, and tall secondary growth. It is generally common and conspicuous, often seen in noisy colonies nesting high in trees, with males displaying their vivid scarlet rumps during vocal courtship rituals. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Amazonian range and a stable population that adapts well to moderately disturbed habitats. Natural history observations highlight its communal nesting behavior, strong social bonds, and pendulous nests woven from plant fibers, with breeding activity peaking during the rainy season.
