The Gray-breasted Sabrewing occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland and foothill forests, especially along river edges and semi-open habitats between roughly 500 and 900 meters elevation. Though generally uncommon, it is regularly observed in forest clearings and treefall gaps, foraging at low to mid-levels and favoring nectar-rich flowering trees. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Amazonian range and no immediate threats, though localized declines may occur due to deforestation. Natural history records note a diet primarily of nectar, occasional insect capture, and moss-lined cup nests built in concealed forest vegetation.
