The Golden-headed Manakin occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland forests, secondary growth, and forest edges below about 1,100 meters, particularly in the Napo and Pastaza regions. Though generally uncommon, it is locally present and most conspicuous during the breeding season, when males gather at communal leks to perform rapid, acrobatic displays involving jumps, slides, and buzzing wing sounds. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Neotropical range and a stable population despite localized habitat pressures. Natural history observations highlight its frugivorous diet, year-round residency, and strong sexual dimorphism, with males sporting glossy black plumage and a brilliant golden crown that contrasts sharply with their pink legs and white thighs.
