Geranoaetus polyosoma
Accipitridae - Hawks, Eagles, and Kites
The Variable Hawk occurs widely across Ecuador, from coastal lowlands to high Andean páramo, typically ranging between 1,500 and 4,500 meters, with the polyosoma and poecilochrous forms both present. It is generally uncommon but regularly observed soaring over open habitats, including grasslands, agricultural fields, and shrublands, where it hunts small mammals, birds, and reptiles. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad South American range and a stable population, though local declines may occur due to habitat conversion and persecution. Natural history observations highlight its striking plumage variability, broad wings adapted for soaring, and large stick nests built on cliffs or tall trees, with breeding documented across a wide elevational gradient.
