Ramphastidae - Toucans
The Crimson-rumped Toucanet occurs along both slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes, with the subspecies A. h. sexnotatus found from northwestern Ecuador south to Loja, inhabiting humid evergreen forests and adjacent semi-open areas typically between 300 and 2,750 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen foraging alone or in small groups at various forest levels, feeding primarily on fruit but also taking insects and bird eggs. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Andean range and a stable population that benefits from its tolerance of secondary growth and forest edges. Natural history observations highlight its vivid green plumage, crimson rump, and seasonal breeding from November to May, though detailed nesting behavior in Ecuador remains lightly documented.
