Cardinalidae - Cardinals and Allies
The Red-capped Cardinal occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits lowland Amazonian forests, river edges, and seasonally flooded woodlands below about 600 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present in suitable riparian habitats, often seen foraging near water in pairs or small groups, with its vivid crimson head and white underparts making it conspicuous among streamside vegetation. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad northern South American range and a stable population not currently facing major threats. Natural history observations highlight its omnivorous diet of fruit and insects, preference for low perches near water, and nesting in dense shrubs or low trees, often near human activity.
