The Blue-black Grassquit is a widespread resident in Ecuador, occurring from lowlands up to about 1,500 m in open habitats such as grasslands, scrub, agricultural fields, and forest edges. It is common and often conspicuous, with males performing their characteristic jumping display while singing from exposed perches. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with stable populations across its range despite localized habitat changes. Its glossy blue-black plumage in males and lively display behavior make it a familiar and distinctive member of Ecuador’s open-country bird communities.
