The Black-faced Dacnis occurs in eastern Ecuador, where it inhabits humid lowland Amazonian forests, particularly in terra firme and riverine habitats below about 800 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often seen in pairs or small mixed-species flocks foraging actively in the canopy for insects and fruit. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Amazonian range and a stable population, though habitat loss may pose future risks. Natural history observations highlight its sexual dimorphism—males with a striking black face and turquoise body—and its preference for high canopy strata, with nesting behavior still poorly documented.
