The Chestnut-fronted Macaw , also known as the Severe Macaw, is a medium-sized parrot found year-round in Ecuador’s eastern lowland forests, particularly within the Amazon basin below about 1,000 meters. It is locally uncommon but occurs in small, noisy flocks that forage in the canopy for fruits, seeds, and blossoms, often nesting in tree cavities. Globally listed as Least Concern, its population is decreasing slowly due to habitat loss and trapping, though it remains widespread across northern South America. Recognizable by its chestnut-colored forehead and sociable nature, this species plays a role in seed dispersal and exhibits strong pair bonds, with both parents sharing in chick-rearing duties.
