Tyrannidae - Tyrant Flycatchers
The Dusky-capped Flycatcher occurs widely across Ecuador, inhabiting humid lowland and foothill forests on both slopes of the Andes, typically from 500 to 2,000 meters. It is generally uncommon but locally present, often detected by its plaintive, descending whistle and seen foraging in the mid-story for insects and small berries. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad Neotropical range and a stable population, though it may be affected by habitat fragmentation in some regions. Natural history observations highlight its cavity-nesting behavior—often in abandoned woodpecker holes—and its preference for dense vegetation, where it joins mixed-species flocks during the non-breeding season.
