The Golden-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis mosquera) is found along the high Andean slopes of Ecuador, primarily between 3,000 and 3,600 meters, where it inhabits elfin forests, stunted montane woodlands, and shrubby páramo edges. Though its range is relatively narrow, it is locally common within suitable habitat, often seen foraging low among flowering shrubs and aggressively defending nectar sources. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, but its population is thought to be slowly declining due to habitat loss and fragmentation. Natural history observations suggest altitudinal movements and solitary nesting behavior, with moss-lined nests placed in sheltered locations such as rock overhangs or dense shrubs.
