Thraupidae - Tanagers and Allies
The Red-crested Finch occurs locally in southwestern Ecuador, particularly in dry intermontane valleys and arid scrub habitats below 1,500 meters, where it favors open areas with scattered shrubs and agricultural edges. It is generally uncommon and patchily distributed, often seen in pairs or small groups foraging on the ground for seeds and insects, with males displaying a distinctive red crest during breeding displays. The species is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, with a broad South American range and a stable population, though its occurrence in Ecuador is limited and may be influenced by habitat alteration. Natural history observations highlight its terrestrial habits, simple vocalizations, and cup-shaped nests built low in shrubs, with breeding activity timed to coincide with seasonal rains.
