The Rock Pigeon, introduced to Ecuador like much of the world, is now widespread in urban centers, agricultural zones, and coastal towns, thriving from sea level to highland cities such as Quito. It is abundant and non-migratory, often forming large flocks around human settlements where it feeds opportunistically on seeds, food scraps, and refuse. Globally listed as Least Concern by the IUCN, its adaptability has made it one of the most successful avian colonizers, though native populations have declined in some regions due to competition with feral forms. Nesting on ledges, rooftops, and building crevices, it breeds year-round, with both parents sharing duties and feeding young a nutrient-rich “pigeon milk” secreted from their crops.
