HEIKE BRIESCHKE
Hello, I am Heike Brieschke from Germany. From childhood on I was fascinated by birds, but it took some sideways (I studied protestant theology first) until I got to the decision to make my hobby my profession.
In South Africa I did the field research on sunbirds in order to obtain my PHD as a biologist finally in 1990 in Frankfurt/Main (Germany). Since then I observed birds where ever I was during my studies (New Zealand, Hawaii, Colombia, Ecuador).
I am not obsessed with my life list, but I admit I always like to see a new species. While I was working in the Protected Forest of Mindo Nambillo I got to know my husband, Pedro Peñafiel.
In the meantime we have two daughters (with binoculars, of course) and together we have founded an ecological foundation specialized in environmental education. When not working for the foundation, I am always eager to go out into the field, for you never know – a new species could be waiting behind the next bush. |
